Interview with Rachael Lippincott & Alyson Derrick

Tell us about Make My Wish Come True! What inspired the story?

Rachael: Watching Hallmark Christmas movies with my (Jewish) mom is one of my favorite things about the holiday season. You know exactly what you’re getting into! There’s a light, fluffy magic to it. And the romance, while predictable at times, is always fun to watch unfold.

The two of us have thought about writing a holiday romcom for a while, and I think with Make My Wish Come True we just wanted to capture all that makes a holiday romcom so special and cozy while having lesbian characters at the forefront. It’s got a bunch of fun stuff in it! A Christmas-obsessed town, a messy actress, an aspiring journalist, a super cool Korean grandma, and two ex-best friends falling in love with each other all over again.

What is your co-writing process like?

Rachael: It depends on the book! We always work together on the outline and laying the foundation of the story.

Alyson: With She Gets the Girl our process was very straightforward. We sat down and outlined together and then we would each write a chapter, exchange them to edit, revise, and then move onto the next one. It was surprisingly smooth and often felt a bit like writing love letters back and forth to each other. However! This one was a little different. We were new moms when we dove into the first draft of this and to be honest I just could not get my head in the game. I felt like my brain was stuck in mom mode and the creative writing juices were not flowing at all for me. Luckily Rachael was there to write for me when I couldn’t. That lady is a writing machine, and I truly don’t know what I would have done without her. So Rachael wrote the bones of all my Arden chapters, and then I combed through and made them my own. Luckily by the time we got it back from our editor to start the second draft, I had found my way into the story and everything went much more smoothly from there.

What are some of your favorite holiday traditions—and did any of them make it into the book?

Rachael: I just love the simple stuff! Family time and playing in the snow and cozy drinks. Having a daughter now makes me even more excited for the holiday season.

The family Hanukkah party that Caroline has is almost identical to my own families, from the assortment of menorahs to light to the people in attendance. It felt so special to be able to include that in the book!

Alyson: My favorite holiday tradition is a secret santa gift exchange that my family does every Christmas Eve!

Finally, let’s play a game of “this or that” to get to know you both better—holiday edition!

‘Tis the season for holiday hijinks in the newest sapphic rom-com about a rising star and a small town girl going on twelve fake holidates from the New York Times bestselling authors of She Gets the Girl, Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick!

Twelve days of fake dates. Two holidays. One chance to convince everyone they’re in love.

Arden James is Hollywood’s hottest teen actor. Infamously reckless, she’s a constant in the tabloids. But when her messy reputation costs her an audition for her dream role, Arden and her publicist make up a lie to flip the script. Only, for the lie to work, she’ll have to head home for the holidays for the first time in four years.

Caroline Beckett has spent those last four years shining up a stellar portfolio that will get her into a top journalism program and convincing herself she could not be less interested in what her former best friend and first crush has been up to since she left without a word. But when Arden suddenly shows up at her doorstep with the promise of a real byline in Cosmopolitan in exchange for a write up on their “secret romance” and twelve snow-covered holidates in their Christmas-obsessed hometown, Caroline can’t help but be tempted into playing along.

It should be easy enough to stand each other for twelve days to make their dreams come true, right? But when old feelings start to bubble up, so do new holiday wishes that might just have Arden and Caroline falling faster than that Christmas Eve snow . . .
