12 Days of YA Book Recommendations: Day 8 – Historical

12 days - theheartofabookblogger

On the eighth day of YA Book Recommendations, I am sharing a favorite historical fiction novel!

And I Darken is the story of a gender-swapped Vlad the Impaler, and it is just as badass as it sounds. So much research was put into this novel, and it shows with how well-written it is. The characters were great and my heart broke watching some of the decisions they made. There was a focus on politics, which I loved, and a surprising focus on religion. Still need more convincing? Read my full review here.

    • Thank you so much! I’m having such a fun time with it! Code Name Verity is one of my favorite books ever, so you need to check that one out if you love historical fiction! I also really enjoyed Vengeance Road! What are some of your favorites?

    • It was so good! I can’t wait for Now I Rise! I’ve been wanting to read My Lady Jane for awhile now! I’ve heard such great things about it!

  • I feel like a black sheep every time someone mentions And I Darken – I actually didn’t like it as much as everyone else did, unfortunately, but I do love the covers. As for other historical books… well… Hidden Gold by Ella Burakowski is a great one for those interested in holocaust related books. In The Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winter is really creepy, but I liked it for a some strange reason.

    • I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy And I Darken. I tend to like reading WWII books, so I’ll definitely check out Hidden Gold. Thanks for the rec!
